Spring is here, and with that comes many wonderful opportunities for learning and fun with spring preschool activities! Springtime makes us all want to head outdoors and enjoy the warmer weather and see all the wonderful things spring brings.

Simple Science Project:

Planting is a wonderful science activity. There are many plant seeds you can buy that will easily grow. All you have to do is get some soil, plant seeds, water, spoons, styrofoam or plastic cups and you are set.

What to do: Have the children spoon soil into their cups until they are almost full. Then give each child a few seeds (carrots, tomatoes, flowers, etc.). Have them set the seeds on the top of the soil and gently push it in the soil just until they can’t see the seed anymore. Put a little bit more soil on the top and then add a little bit of water to moisten the soil and seeds.

  • Set the cups with the children’s names on them somewhere where they won’t get knocked over and where they will get a nice amount of sunlight.
  • Keep the soil moist by watering at least one daily so the seeds will germinate and begin to grow.
  • Each day look at the plants, water them if necessary, talk about what you see or don’t see happening yet, and document on a piece of chart paper.

Creative Movement:

An activity you can do during your circle routine is a creative movement activity. Talk about planting seeds and watering them and how flowers start out small and grow tall from the ground. Then when you are finished explaining that, tell them that you can all pretend to be flowers growing. Play some music in the background and start out by having the children crouch in a ball on the floor like a seed, and pretend to go around and “water” the children (if you have a watering can at home you can bring it in and pretend to water them with that).

Then once you have “watered” all the children, sing Mr. Golden Sun and tell the children to slowly grow up like a flower and stretch out tall while you are singing. Then once the children are all “grown” into flowers they can move and sway around to the music that’s on in the background.

Let’s Clean Up:

Making children aware of the environment around them is wonderful. Teaching them how to keep it clean is a great asset to them as well as all of us trying to help out in our own neighborhood. A nice spring preschool activities you can do with the children is to find a local park that is within walking distance of your house, daycare center, etc. Bring along a couple of garbage bags and do a spring clean up of any garbage you see.

When you are done, walk back to the school with the garbage, talk about how much you found, what you found, and where should the garbage have really gone. You can talk about littering and the effects it can have on our environment. Then dispose of the garbage in a dumpster or how ever you dispose of garbage at your center.

If you are worried about the children using their bare hands to pick up garbage you can try to find small gloves for the children or go to a dollar store and buy some tongs for the children to pick up the garbage with. Once you are done, you can wash the tongs and re-use them next spring or for a summer clean-up.

Spring Preschool Activities: Birdwatching, Fun & Easy

If you have any large windows in your house or your daycare center you will love this next spring idea. All you need is a bird feeder and some bird food. They have ones you can hang on a pole right outside your window, or also bird feeders that stick to your window with suction cups. The children can watch the birds come and eat, they will see many different types of birds. Everyone can have a turn putting bird seed in the feeder on different days so they can feed the birds with very fun spring preschool activities like this.

Remember, somethings may seem simple and ordinary to us, but to children it can be a vital learning experience. Don’t make programming or finding spring preschool activities hard for your self. A lot of time just listening to the children interact with one another will also help you find out what they are interested in. You can use their interests in planning your spring preschool activities as well.

I hope you enjoy your spring and your spring preschool activities, have lots of fun with the preschoolers in your life!
